student clinical placements

Rochester and Elmore District health Service (REDHS) aims to provide a valuable and supportive environment that encourages students to achieve their learning objectives.

All students commencing placement at REDHS will have received a roster indicating their shifts and the area of placement.

Prior to commencing placement at REDHS, students should print the REDHS Student Orientation Book and bring it with them on their first day.

On day of commencement.
Students must report to the Clinical Support Nurse (CSN) at REDHS Education Hub at 0830.
REDHS Education Hub is located in Village Drive. Please see map below.
Students are required to bring hard copies of their:
  • Evidence of a current Working with Children's Check
  • National Police records Check
  • Immunisation record
Please note that if you arrive without all the relevant documentation, you will be asked to either obtain relevant documents or to discontinue placement and further placement will be negotiated with your education provider.

Accommodation
Student accommodation is available on site. It is shared accommodation consisting of 3 bedrooms, 2 rooms with 2 single beds and 1 room with a double bed.
Accommodation must be booked using the Accommodation booking request form.

Student Responsibilities
During your placement at REDHS you will be considered to be a member of the team in the area that you are working. As such a code of conduct is expected.

REDHS values are:

REDHS expects all students to be punctual. if you are late or unable to attend you must notify the area that you are working in and also notify the CSN. If you are unable to attend you must also notify your Education provider.

Whilst on placement the following points are important:
  • All students work as part of a team
  • Students are accountable for their own actions and behaviour
  • Students are aware that everyone has the right to be treated with respect and dignity
  • Students provide excellent customer service through responsiveness' and effective communication
  • Notify the nurse in charge when leaving the unit for breaks
  • Abide by REDHS Privacy and Confidentiality Policy

Professional Appearance
  • Students should wear the University/TAFE student uniform
  • Official name badge of the University/TAFE
  • Jewellery is to be kept to a minimum and must not interfere with patient/resident care: a wedding band may be worn
  • Footwear must be water resistant, have a closed in toe and full back
  • Facial piercings; in the interest of your safety and patient safety these must be studs only
  • Hair to be clean and neat if you have long hair it must be tied back

Hours of work:
Acute and Aged Care: 0700-1530, 1300-2130
District Nursing Service: 0745-1615
Primary care- Allied Health; 0830-1700

Tips for students
  • Plan your learning objectives for each day
  • Review your objectives continually throughout your placement
  • Ask lots of questions- remember there are no silly questions
  • Use quiet times on the ward to complete research
  • Make the most of every opportunity
