A 'Display Properties' box will come up starting "Windows will now resize you desktop. This could take a few seconds, during which your screen might flicker. ... " Click on the OK button and a new window should pop up "Monitor settings".

The Montor Settings window says "You resized your desktop. Do you want to keep these settings." If you click Yes, the new settings will be saved. If you do nothing, or click No, the old settings will be restored.

You can try other settings if you wish, but not all combinations Windows will allow will provide a clear, flicker-free display.
